Clean transport in Europe: key trends to watch out for
T&E’s quarterly trends series gives a snapshot of the key developments that will define the future of clean transport in Europe. And what Europe does – given it wants to lead this field – should influence what happens worldwide. T&E’s Thomas Earl brings attention to four issues. First, proven progress in this major sector makes it a contender for a significant role in Europe’s new industrial strategy. It ranges from battery and electronics manufacturing to the deployment of private and public charging infrastructure. Players include Germany, Spain and France (sheer scale) as well as Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic (per capita production). Secondly, EU targets are not keeping pace with the stated ambitions of zero-emission truck makers. Next, a warning that trucks powered by LNG are no better for the climate than conventional diesel trucks. And finally, a look at how EV subsidies vary among countries, citing Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Poland. The findings summarise T&E’s own deeper reports.
A 21st century industrial strategy for Europe
The expected scale up of electric car production is good news for the European economy. From battery and electronics manufacturing to the deployment of private and public charging infrastructure, Europe has the chance to lead in one of the 21st century’s defining technologies.
According to T&E’s analysis of carmakers’ production plans, Western European countries such as Germany, Spain and France are forecasted to host the largest battery electric (BEV) production volumes in 2030.
